SEVEN

Forty-Five Minutes Earlier

Calum sprang to his feet. The officer reached for his handgun.

“Sure you want to lose your job over painkillers?” said Calum. He waved the box of pills he had received from the other doctor when he had first visited the clinic.

He walked up to the door and pulled it open. He leaned outside. “Doctor,” he shouted at the retreating form. “I think I would like to take that prescription.”

Carla turned around. “Are you sure this time?”

There was a slight hesitation. Why was he even agreeing to all of this? What if he was going to become part of something that would brand him a criminal? He realized that it didn’t matter. Even if he simply returned to the room and sat back down, all he would be doing was handing over his fate to a system that was clearly influenced to go one way. His imprisonment.

Why not try to change something? Sure, he had no idea what he was part of, but it was better than simply sitting down and allowing things to happen to him.

“Yes,” said Calum. “I think I would like to get a little more comfortable.”

He felt the officer’s presence beside him. The man had stepped outside, obviously trying to see what was happening.

Carla walked up to him and checked the bottle he was holding in his hand. “This should be good enough.” She looked into his eyes. “That pain you will experience might be rather intense, but bear with it.” Something told Calum that she was not talking about his injuries. “Stay strong, detective. Think about your father in all of this. And try to talk to the Captain if you need more help for the discomfort.”

With that, she walked away from him.

What did she mean by that? The Captain? And his father? Was that what she was trying to say?

For the longest time, he hadn’t paid attention to what had happened to his father after he last saw him. No, it wasn’t that he didn’t try to understand. It was more that he simply chose to ignore. It was best to put it all behind him. A sad memory that had come and gone, like dull weather that lasted too long before something else took over. In Calum’s case, it was lasting days of bitter cold that permeated his soul.

Every now and then, he would be able to catch a glimpse of the sun. A warm moment here. A cozy incident there. But that was it. His world felt like a global apocalypse where the sun had effectively decided to hide behind thick clouds, only showing its face as a teaser for better things.

Yet after what the psychologist had told him, he wondered what he had forgotten to look into.

Calum had no idea how long he had been standing there. The tap on his shoulder brought him back to reality. Turning around, he spotted Officer Stan looking at him with a grin on his face. It wasn’t difficult to see what the man was happy about.
